Join SHRM Western Colorado and the Law firm of Bechtel and Santo for the 2026 annual Legislative Update Conference.
Great for HR Professionals, Employers, Business Owners, and anyone who wants to learn more about employment law!
Conference Lineup:
Bad News Bears (Legal and Legislative Update) - This annual update will include recent and potential changes to Federal and Colorado law, including a number of bills currently at the Colorado legislature that concern wage and hour issues, temperatures in the workplace, union elections, FAMLI leave, etc. This talk will also keep you apprised of recent developments in Federal and Colorado case law and inform you of potential changes to employment and labor law that we might see in 2026 and beyond. Presenter: Michael Santo
Moneyball (Wage-and-Hour Talk) - Where have employers struck out in wage- and-hour law compliance? Where have organizations seen their pennant hopes fall short on those day-to-day wage issues? In this presentation, we will review recent Colorado and Federal Wage and Hour cases to develop policies and practices to ensure that employers don’t get tripped on issues like travel time, record keeping, exemptions, deductions, minimum wage, etc. Presenter: Keely McCabe
Nine Innings of HR Compliance - In this presentation we will go over everything from posting positions to termination of employment looking at both the legal requirements and ethical pitfalls for each phase of the employment process. Prepare to learn about laws and ethics on hiring, promoting, investigating, and more with fun examples and audience participation. Presenter: Christina Harney
Going On the IR (Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, Accommodation Issues, Leaves, HFWA, FAMLI) - With “who” on first, “what” is on second, and “I don’t know” over on third, employers frequently face issues with their employees’ illness(es), disability/disabilities, accommodation(s) request(s), leaves, etc. This presentation will discuss critical steps organizations should undertake to manage accommodation and leave request(s) from employees, including understanding how to evaluate essential job functions and accommodation requests and avoiding common missteps that can lead to potential liability. This presentation will also explore practical scenarios that balance compliance, inclusion, and operational needs — helping you protect employee rights while reducing organizational risk. Presenter: Michael Santo
Around the Horn (Q&A Session) - The panel will go “around the horn” to discuss pressing employment law/HR issues. Come prepared to ask questions and talk about any employment law topic. We will also prompt discussion with thoughts on how to address requests for remote work out of the state, harassment training, and other issues not covered in other talks. Presenters: Christina Harney, Keely McCabe, and Michael Santo
